Rapid Online Sample of Communication (ROSCO)

Study Focus: ROSCO is a research project that helps us understand how individuals with complex developmental differences, including those with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, or rare genetic disorders, communicate over time. Using video and caregiver input, we capture natural, everyday ways people express themselves—through sounds, gestures, facial expressions, and more—all from the comfort of their homes. ROSCO aims to celebrate and learn from these unique forms of communication to better support individuals and their families.
Recruiting: ROSCO is actively recruiting participants with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS), or other neurodevelopmental differences with minimal spoken speech, between the ages 4-18 years old.

Exploration of Vocalizations (EVOCA)

Study Focus: EVOCA takes a deep dive in the vocalizations from non- and minimally-speaking individuals with complex neurodevelopmental differences. Vocalizations are recorded over time using a custom smartphone app. This research aims to develop tools and understanding about how vocalizations grow and change with this population to accurately measure and support their unique communicative abilities.
Recruiting: EVOCA is actively recruiting participants with autism spectrum disorder or neurodevelopmental differences with minimal spoken speech, between the ages 6-35 years old.
